Was ist das?

Das ist nicht ein hund Delfin.
The above is, apparently, a standing joke in his 1/2 of the family.  It seems the offspring were learning German and there was a series following the formula:-
"Was ist das?"  - Das ist nicht ein Hund, das ist ein Thingy"
(Whatever the item was)
SO - If any of them asked, when on a walk they always said Was ist das?"  the answer was inevitable preceded by above quote then the correct answer.
Jerra and I are again in the Land o' the Haggis and again, inevitably on Dolphin watch.
Jerra saw one flash of a back. The extra was the only Dolphin I saw.
