Sgwarnog: In the Field

Candlestick

The closer you get to towering chimney of Manningham Mills, the more opportunities there are for de/re contextualising it in the surrounding streetscape. Separated from the bulk of its mill beneath, it emerges like a candlestick from the mundane surroundings.

Or at least that’s what I thought as I wandered up Scotchman Road for an evening football game at Campion AFC. Most of the pre-season friendlies that I get to involve some combination of the same ten Bradford & District teams playing each other. Tonight Bradford (Park Avenue) were the visitors - they play four steps above Campion, but the teams were were well matched for much of the game. Mass substitutions at half-time and the presence of a number of a trialists gave the event more of a training game feel, but they was some good play and a goal apiece.

The downside of evening fixtures at Campion is that my bus home is only once an hour, and not well synchronised with the match finishing time. At this time of year though, it was still light so I was able to stroll back down through Lister Park, still full of families enjoying the late evening, and then just kept going for a couple of miles to end up back in Shipley where there was a bus to get me up the hill.
