Museumsinsel
Number 175: Berlin’s latest underground station opened today for regular service. This line is 22.5 km long in east -west direction. The first stretch was opened in 1930. Since then it was extended in parts. The last bit runs from Hauptbahnhof to Alexanderplatz with stops ( amongst others) at Brandenburger Tor and Museumsinsel. The design of the ceiling is a Hommage to the famous architect Friedrich Schinkel who was accountable for many representative buildings in the early 19th century Berlin. Here the blue ceiling is to resemble Schinkel’s starry sky, a stage scenery he designed for Mozart’s Magic Flute in 1815.
