Blipper friend GillyH mentioned they were also known as Japanese allspice so I searched on the internet and found the following - Wintersweet shrubs (Chimonanthus praecox) are popular ornamentals in their native land of China. They were introduced to Japan in the 17th century where the plant is called Japanese allspice.
