Off in the distance

This week's woodland walk was in Brampton Wood among lots of butterflies and moths, of which I know almost nothing. Trouble is they just don't sit still! But the handy Wildlife Trust leaflet showed the difference between the comma and the silver-washed fritillary (beautiful name) so that's two ticked off the beginner's list.

Just slightly further down the path there was a great flurry of what looked like tiny hummingbirds, with madly whirring wings and flashes of vibrant colour. It turned out to be a shimmering patch of something or other in full bloom and above it a 'whisper' of cinnabar moths darting around between the stems. The other collective noun for moths is a 'universe' but I love 'whisper'.

All the little woodland paths here lead into three sweeping rides, two small and this larger one. It's spectacular and a little bit hilly which meant I could just see the tiny person taking a walk into the dip below.
