Through dampened streets
Knowing soon the light would fade
And the rain would come
And all we’d want was home
At the beach she waited
In a sheltered corner of the promenade
While I walked alone on the jetty
And towards the crashing surf
The fishermen in their wet weather gear
Were silent even as they reeled in fish
And laid doleful eyes on the dark figure
Stepping carefully between their rods
I thought about their brotherhood
And what brought them out at times like these
And what they made of me
As I stood as best I could
And leaned into the wind
