The Guildhall, Carlisle

The Guildhall, one of the four oldest buildings in Carlisle, is a half-timbered house believed to date from the late 14th Century. Gifted to the city by Richard de Redeness, the building was used as the meeting place of the town's eight medieval Trade Guilds. Its upper floors project outwards in the usual fashion of early timber-framed structures and much of that early timber-work survives along with its wattle-and-daub internal walls. It appears to have been built on a slight slope and, as is the usual case with these old buildings, nothing seems to be either straight or level making it quite awkward to photograph nicely, but I enjoyed the challenge. The weather was pretty miserable too.
