The long-held tradition of blowing the horn continued tonight …. now from the Market Square. It’s been blown from the Hornblowers’ houses throughout Covid times but tonight returned to the place where it happened, every night, since 882. Apparently, King Alfred gave the first horn to the good people of Ripon, being impressed by all he saw and who he met, and it’s been blown at 9pm nightly ever since. The Wakeman finishes the ceremony with the words, “The watch is now set, sleep well.”
