Mystery story

We stopped at what we thought would be a wildlife reserve (the Sturts: https://www.herefordshirewt.org/nature-reserves/sturts-north) but was really just a big field. However, in one corner of the field was a mystery. This fence post is carved on two faces with a short story:

"Basil and his brothers caught rabbits as the flood rose"

and then on the back:

"And they caught fish"

No further explanation anywhere. Must have been a noteworthy event to justify carving it on a post, but I can't find anything else about it.
