Muggart
I always knew this plant as muggart as a child - I’ve been getting a bit confused when I try to research this. The Scots word muggart is translated as mugwort, which seems to be a different plant. The one I know though is ragwort, which my father used to chop down as it is poisonous to livestock, particularly horses.
Although many farmers try to prevent ragwort spreading on their land, conservationists also argue that it is an important part of our native flora and it supports around 30 species of bee, beetle and other insects. As a result, while many farmers see ragwort can be dangerous to livestock, they also recognise ragwort for biodiversity and do not advocate blanket removal of the plant.
