A beer at the end of a hard day.
I think I earned it. We have a builder friend in at the moment lifting the pavers around the pool in order to lay them down again more securely on cement mortar. We are also having cement edgings put in which have to be dug in quite deep. So, I thought I was being clever by paying our builder friend to do it for me and he began the job yesterday. This morning, however, it became clear that he was finding it tough going working alone in the mid-thirties heat and so I agreed to be his labourer for the day. This largely consisted of me digging trenches for the edging, barrowing away loads of soil and using said soil to fill dips and hollows in the garden. Now, I am a northern Irish man, used to working in northern Irish temperatures (though I gather that even these are quite high at the moment). But it was 36 degrees celsius here today, so a labourer's shift from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. was pretty daunting. Still, I stayed well hydrated and we got lots done and I was glad of my beer at the end of the day. More of the same tomorrow!
