Falkirk Wheel
Mister F and myself had a jaunt through to Falkirk to meet up with friends D & M for the first time in a couple of years - it was great to see them again! After lunch at The Boardwalk on Millennium Wheel Drive we went over to the Falkirk Wheel itself. It's the world's first and only rotating boat lift, designed and built to connect The Forth and Clyde Canal and The Union Canal which allows coast to coast navigation across central Scotland. Work started in 1998 and it opened in 2002. The design is said to be inspired by a Celtic double headed spear, a propeller of a ship, the ribcage of a whale and the spine of a fish. Regardless it's a beautiful piece of engineering!
There were lots of families and kids picnicking in the grounds around the wheel and messing around in the water. The sign that said "Boating Pond, No Bathing" was paid no notice at all on another scorcher of a day!
