Comma makes a full stop

Another very hot day! This morning I went to visit  a friend but, after about ten minutes, she had  a panicky call from her daughter, who asked my friend to be on standby to make the five hour drive  to Cheshire to help out with a sick child, so our meeting was cut short and I went home! Later I heard the child was on the mend and my friend was spared a long drive. (To me, it had seemed an unreasonable demand on my friend.)  I spent much of the day reading in the garden and keeping hydrated, which I didn't mind at all! This evening we went for  a short walk to visit our local  wildlife area. This butterfly helpfully landed on a bench and allowed me to take its photo.
