Sun of Barley

Today's the day ...................... to fly the flag

Our flagpole is currently featuring the flag of the Hebridean Island of Tiree, where we spent such an enjoyable few days last month.

It's a community flag, the result of a competition held in 2018 to find a design which would proclaim the unique identity of Tiree.  It was won by Donald Cameron from Scarinish who managed to swing 56% of the vote. He used the stalks of barley to represent the fact that Tiree is the most fertile of all the Hebridean Islands, known for centuries as Tìr an Eòrna, ‘the land of barley’.  They are arranged in an orb to symbolise the ‘sunshine isle’,Tiree being one of the sunniest places in Britain.

I bought the flag in a lovely little cafe called the Yellow Hare (see extra) and I promised the lady there that I would send her a picture of it flying proudly from Dumfries and Galloway.

So here it is - for all to see .....................
