The dropped stitch

Rousay wanderings

I had only a little work to do, and then the rest of the day on Rousay could be devoted to exploring.

This photo taken in the Corse Kirk graveyard, Wasbister.
So much lichen - covering many of the grave stones and growing thickly on the surrounding walls. I love the way nature has picked out the letters of the inscriptions.

The extra is of the Free Church at Sourin. I was interested to read up about it and found that James Leonard of Digro (who I blipped about on a Rousay visit last month), was an elder here.

The church started life as a long, narrow, thatched building but was rebuilt in the late 1840s at which time services moved out of doors until the building work was completed. Hopefully that was in the summertime.

When the famous hurricane hit Orkney in February 1952 the bell tower fell to the ground. It was never replaced and by the end of the '60s the church was no longer in use.
