St. Patrick's cross
I had an appointment with the chiropractor this morning so we went early to Downpatrick thinking we could have a coffee in the St Patrick Centre first and maybe a wander. We wandered first up to Down Cathedral, this is a replica of St Patrick's Cross, one of the largest and tallest celtic crosses. The original was placed on Cathedral Hill sometime between 750 and 850AD, this replica was erected in 2018. There are still 3 pieces of the original cross at the front of the Cathedral. We also had a walk to St Patrick's grave, he first came to Ireland in 44eAD and is responsible for bringing Christianity to Ireland. His body was re-interred here at Downpatrick in the 12th century, and was buried with St. Brigid and St Columba. It was a very interesting wander! I knew St Patrick's grave was near the cathedral but I had never been to visit it before.
