Exploring
Up early and packed a small bag to head east. Listened to Klara and the sun by Kazuo Ishiguro all the way…very good….and no traffic so an easy drive. Arrived and spotted a cafe in the village square so just pulled in and ordered tea and a scone whilst I waited for S. Once she arrived we found where we’ll be staying and headed off to explore a bit. Warm but cloudy again, so we had a good wander around Burnham Market, in and out of all the little shops and art galleries. Started to rain as we headed back to the car and continued as we explored Holkham area…may return to walk around the Hall’s grounds tomorrow but enjoyed the country gardens of the little houses near the entrance and the huge avenue of Holm Oaks (identified thanks to sending photos to T!).
Carried on via an art exhibition to Wells where the rain was really heavy and the seafood restaurant booked all week, with the fish and chip shop carry out only. We walked along the water’s edge, but the tide was out and so there was more sand than water and a wide expanse of salt marsh/bog beyond the boats…strange almost eerie landscape that I don’t find very attractive…need to see the sea itself (odd that the villages are called ‘xx next-the-sea’ when they’re certainly NOT next the sea at all!). Still, apart from that I’ve enjoyed the places we’ve seen today much more than the last time I came to this part of the world. Particularly love the little cottages and all the brick and flint/pebble building combinations. Everything looking very carefully renovated or even new built in traditional style…certainly a sense of this being Chelsea on Sea with a lot of holiday homes and upmarket shops…Farrow and Ball paint everywhere (and even a village called Stiffkey!)
We ended up in Holt for fish and chip supper at Eric’s (extra). We were hungry and it was delicious….the fish itself was really good and we demolished the whole thing.
Back to our shrine lodging in Little Walsingham. Very basic but clean accommodation and we found a TV room which we mainly had to ourselves so watched a programme about the V&A museum. We’ll see what the night’s like and the breakfast….hoping we won’t get rain tomorrow so can explore some more
