Guys Hospital

Amidst the most furious thunder and lightning that I can remember we make our way from the Tate Modern to Guys Hospital to see the plaque that was erected a year ago to remember their medical students who were airlifted into Belsen concentration camp at its liberation in 1945. We found the colonnade where we thought it was, and asked at the porters lodge but no-one seemed to know where it could be found. To be fair, they were having to deal with floods in the building. It turned out to be right under our noses, across from the porters' lodge!

My father was one of these students. They had thought they were on their way to The Netherlands, only to be diverted. It was a life-changing experience, but one that he never really talked about.
