Finding My Bearings

By JustJuli

Hair-raising!

We had a much gentler walk today, at a lake called Tarn Hows. It used to be owned by Beatrix Potter and she left all her land, including this area, and her house to the National Trust in her will. No wonder she loved it there and wanted it preserved, it was stunning and I’ve put a few more pictures in the ‘extras’’.

We had booked to go to Beatrix Potter’s house, Hill Top, afterwards but never made it. Neither my husband nor I are nervous drivers but the roads round here are ridiculously narrow, with stone walls either side. If you’d told me yesterday that a huge dustcart, eight-berth motor home or a full-blown thirty-eight tonne lorry could have squeezed past us on a road no wider than a Nissan Micra, I wouldn’t have believed you but that’s exactly what it was like today. And the locals don’t slow down at all!

It was a real shame but by the time the satnav told us to turn up a three-mile-long, practically vertical dirt road with no passing places, we gave up and went home!

It was still a great day out… but we did buy some alcohol on the way home!
