Unity
I obviously haven’t been to Chichester for quite a while as I noticed this bench sculpture today for the first time and, when I looked it up, I discovered it had been there since March! Anyway, it’s a pandemic memorial called ‘Unity’ and it’s by John Gillespie of Singleton. It features a two-metre space for social distancing and is made with keys engraved with key workers’ job titles. On the other side of the bench it says:
Come and rest a while with me
Seek your role or simply be
While we stayed at home, when we felt scared
You risked your lives for us, you cared
A superhero you may not be
But that’s what we, the nation, see
