Nërp has been in his workshop talking things over with his niece Jīqìrén and they've reached reached a conclusion: his best chance of making Wilson rich is to exploit human greed and avarice… and almost total ignorance of statistics.
He has decided to start his own National Lottery.
Gullible people will buy tickets, and he will 'think up' the winning numbers in the manner of Ernie.
'What?' I asked, 'Ernie – the Fastest Milkman In The West?'
He favoured me with a look so withering it can probably only be achieved by an android addressing an inferior intellect.
'I was referring' he explained, in the manner of one addressing an imbecile, 'to Ernie the Electronic Random Number Indicating Equipment computer – the crude hardware-based device built in 1952 by a team at the Post Office Research Station led by Sidney Broadhurst. The designers were Tommy Flowers and Harry Fensom. "Ernie" was derived from the WW2 computer "Colossus" – which was built in the days before computers were named after fruit…'
