‘Gravestones and Trees’
I went for a walk around Dean Cemetery this afternoon.
Tranquil and wooded, it’s on the North side of the city - just beyond the Dean Village. It was opened in the 1846 and quickly established itself amongst inhabitants of the New Town as the most fashionable cemetery in Edinburgh. At a time when the memory of ‘grave robbers’ such as Burke and Hare was still fresh, it’s solid walls and gates also made it one of the most secure!
What I really noticed today, however, was the trees! Many of the larger ones, including limes, ash and sycamore, were planted many years ago and are now beginning to dwarf - and in some cases overwhelm - the neighbouring graves.
