I'm not a gull expert but I think this is a common gull. Surprisingly common gulls are not that common. They are smaller than herring gulls and have greenish legs rather than pink. They also have a more slender bill and softer features. 

Although we had a bit of a sunny spell the weather turned in the afternoon and we had some rain. It was also a little breezy on the coast  and there weren't many people on the beaches.
