Barra and Vatersay - special places to visit.
A straightforward drive down through Benebecula, South Uist and across the causeway to Eriskay to catch the Barra ferry, on time and fully booked. The car in front was driven by a colleague of our younger son….
Barra is simply lovely. Many contrasts. Beaches, hills, inlets, scattered settlements. It felt like there’s a sense of community too. Time and money was spent in Castlebay, but we’d no opportunity to get to Kisimul Castle as closed; many historic sites still shut in response to Covid19 restrictions.
South across another causeway to Vatersay, the most southerly inhabited island of the Outer Hebrides. Quite breathtaking. Photo of my wife taken at the dunes at Vatersay bay beach. And of our sons (extra photo) at the crystal clear waters edge. We crossed the Machair to another beach; lovely wild fauna and flora (extra photo).
Barra is the only place in the world where scheduled flights land on beach. Cockle Strand beach is tidal, so the schedules reflect the tides. We watched the afternoon Loganair flight land and take off, quite an experience (extra photo). Plane spotter’s new wedding ring obvious…(extra photo).
A selfie, a boat at the ferry slipway and driving onto the return ferry (all extra photos) completes today’s journal entry.
Barra and Vatersay….. we’ll be back.
