Close Another Door
Mrs C had reluctantly conceded that the DVD storage units could go back in the lounge, on the condition that doors were fitted so we didn’t have to look at the contents of said units.
I could have asked the joiner to make some, but he had more than enough to do fabricating shelves and a laundry basket for the bedroom. As the units were originally from IKEA, I reasoned that there were probably doors available that would fit straight on.
I was partly right. There were doors of (almost) the right colour and size available. But they were not intended for our units. In fact, the product information label was at pains to point out that the doors were not suitable for pre 2014 units and we miss that cut off by 20 odd years!!
But I have a cordless drill and have been watching our joiner at work for the last few weeks. How hard could it be to fit a couple of doors?
P*ss easy as it turns out! Hold door in position, mark the casing where the hinges should be attached, drill 4 holes and tighten screws. Repeat for the other door and then do the usual adjusting to get them lined up. Under an hour from start to finish, including tidying up afterwards.
As there is nothing worth watching on the telly tonight, I will retrieve the DVDs from their storage in the loft and see what we can find. Though, as the newly fitted hinges do intrude slightly on the shelves, we may have to have a little cull. I sense a “discussion” looming about the relative merits of “Charlie’s Angels” and “The Simpsons Movie”…
