Heron in flight

Herons are grey, so it is surprising to see that in flight they look black. Maybe someone can explain it to me. I was walking along the canal path, and saw this stationary heron, standing tall and looking like a statue. Some folk were coming the other way and I knew that sooner or later the bird would take off. When it did, I went click, click, click.
