But, then again . . . . .

The Ship Inn.

About 50 years ago I knew a cyclist in the Essex DA who used to go around the various cycle clubs giving slide shows, the one I remember was called "Pub Crawl." Jack was a collector of genres of photograph, one of which was inn signs. In those days there were a lot more public houses scattered around the countryside, a large proportion of them having well crafted, colourful and well maintained signs.
Many of them also had interesting names, somewhere I have a photo of "The Kicking Donkey" in Harwell which was replaced by flats many years ago.

Ever since Jack's display, I have, on and off, kept an eye open for interesting examples and the Ship Inn at Easter Compton, a village a couple of miles outside Bristle was a fine example. "Was," because it is now badly faded, fortunately, the power of PhotoShop is able to restore it to what I hope is its former glory.
The search will continue.

Another friend from that era, one of the handful of Daves in the cycle club, had the ambition of opening a pub called "The Pedaller's Legs," it would have a sign in the car park saying, "Cyclists, tattie pickers and gypsies only." It's odd really because he is a dour sort of chap.
