Apparently this is called an 'iron'. What you do is you put some water in through this little hole on the top, plug it into an electric socket and then it gets really, really hot. Once it's hot enough you can use it to flatten clothing, or any bits of material you might want to be particularly flat. Incredible. I had no idea such an amazing invention existed.

Quite why material needs to be flat is a mystery though.
