Bird Cherries

Down by the river we came upon several bird cherries, their small black fruits were set off by leaves which are already taking on autumnal colours. In the rain these leaves looked as if they had been enamelled. In the long grass under the cherries was the second flowering of a few pale dog violets - more usually associated with Spring - a lovely reminder that renewing Spring will come again.
