Signalhouse Point

Near Prawle Point on the South Devon coast.  It was glorious weather for a scramble around the coastal path today and we saw many sailing vessels out to sea, as well as the Salcombe Lifeboat motoring rapidly southeast around the coast.

And we visited Torcross, on Slapton Sands, scene of the disastrous Exercise Tiger in December 1943, shortly after 3,000 local inhabitants had been evacuated from the area.  I write disastrous as 749 died in the exercise, but it provided valuable lessons for the D-Day landings for which it was a rehearsal.  I have a snap of Slip-on Sands in the Extra.

My abiding memories of this area will be the beauty of the coast and the narrowness of the tiny lanes, along with their massive hedges.  You travel nowhere fast, and those who try risk serious collisions with other cars or the countryside.
