TINY TUESDAY - VEGETABLE

Unusually for me, I looked at the theme for Tiny Tuesday before I went out into the garden.   Mr. HCB had gone out for a walk with his friend, Barry, so after I had had my shower, I decided to have a wander around the garden in my pink robe - but I have to say it was rather chilly!  There is a north westerly wind, so I’m not sure that we will be sitting in our garden today, unless like yesterday, I bundle myself up in my fleece to keep my body warm and my new sun hat to keep my head warm - it’s a bit too early for bobble hats!

Mr. HCB keeps saying he will dig up the broad bean haulms, but when I questioned this morning why he hadn’t done it, he said that there was method in not doing it.  When he strims and then mows the lawn, he will put the cuttings in our green bin, but if he puts the broad bean haulms in there first, it won’t all go soggy on the bottom - and we all know, you don’t want a soggy bottom - in your baking or in your green bin!

I wasn’t happy with the shots I took with my iPhone so I decided to get out my Canon camera and take a few shots with that - and these were much better, so this is my offering for Tiny Tuesday - dead broad bean haulms with seedheads, which are now acting as hosts for Sonchus Oleraceus or the Common Milk Thistle, a large weed, which is also in the same bed.

Thankfully, although the tomatoes aren’t ripening that quickly, we have plenty of runner beans, French beans, peas, cucumbers, carrots and spring onions, and the tromboncinos, our Italian climbing squashes and the courgettes are coming along well too.  I might be chutney making before too long.

Yesterday afternoon, Mr. HCB decided to strim part of the long grass ready for us to prepare it for the wild flower seeds later in September, and I’m glad to say that he noticed the little frog in my extra collage before he strimmed that part.  The frog hopped away and was last seen nestling in one of our Heucheras.  I do hope there aren’t any more in the bigger area of long grass but we might have to “beat” it before it gets strimmed just to make sure.

This quote is certainly true of Mr. HCB at the moment:

“In order to live off a garden,
you practically have to live in it.”

P.S.  Latest update on my sponsorship total for the 100 Abstracts that I did for the Mamie Martin Fund, which supports impoverished girls in North Malawi and enables them to obtain a good secondary school education - it now stands at £979.95.  I am so thrilled and want to thank all those who have donated to this worthy cause.  I will be closing the page quite soon, so if you haven't sponsored me, then please consider doing so in the next few days.  M xx
