Fruit or vegetable
NEITHER...
I looked up what it was and I found out that they are inverted flowers. Their flowers bloom inside the pod, which later matures into the fruit we eat. Each flower produces a single, one seeded hard shelled fruit. So when we eat the fig we are actually eating multiple fruits.
Because the flowers bloom internally, they need a special process for pollination. The female fig wasp enters the fig to lay the eggs, because the wings and antennae break off when entering, it cannot get out. The baby wasps continue the life cycle. Male baby wasps are born without wings, because their sole purpose is to mate with the female offspring, and dig a tunnel out of the fig. It's the female offspring that make the journey out, bringing pollen with them.
But relax, most commercial figs, like the one you buy at the store, are grown without wasps., they are sprayed with hormones.
You are wondering about the names, the reason why I found out about this, was that I needed a name for the purple fig. There are over 700 named varieties of fig trees. Our tree with the purple figs was a gift from Mario, so we call it Mario's fig tree. 'Mystery X fig" is a name from a nursery's catalogue.
