Lords and Ladies

Arum maculatum.  Here seen alongside a path in the garden. It is common in woodland throughout Europe.

Here the leaves and the spathe have rotted away leaving the unmistakeable berries. These are very poisonous to humans and 
to other mammals but can be eaten by birds.

In former times the roots were used to make a starch for stiffening clothing.
