History

A quick flypast shot of this building as I headed north again to do some more packing and sort out bank accounts.

Like most east coast fishing towns Spittal was renowned for its herring fishing in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. This building dates from then and is where the herring-girls worked gutting and packing. Three women worked in a crew…two gutting and one packing, apparently experienced workers could gut 60 fish a minute! It was a very hard life but the herring-girls could look after themselves…they were very tough! Nowadays the building hosts the sailing club.

Much warmer than expected today, the A1 both north and south was very busy and Dunbar was heaving with visitors when we went down to the bank.

Thanks to RockArea for hosting Wide Wednesday for a few weeks.
