Food for thought
Visited a castle today of some super Prussian nobles (the Hohenzollern) who became/were born into the German emperor line during the 19th and 20th centuries. While I was walking through the showrooms and seeing all the oil canvas portraits, I thought how ironic it was that in the many years I had visited such castles in Europe, this was the first time I was fully aware of the “whiteness” surrounding us. How much of the wealth we saw today was normalised by the stuff we read in stories and fantasised about in the realm of fairy tale universes? How many more people would visit places of socially and economically deprived resources if we’d grow up empathising with characters who represent the majority of the population from troubled backgrounds? Why pour money into a sector that has profited from wealth all along when others standing closer to us need it more urgently?
