Flies

The worst time of year, for what we simply call "Bremsen" Tabanus sulcifrons which are known as horseflies in English, but the Germans use the word "Pferdebremsen"=Horseflies to describe the much larger and really threatening  dark giant horsefly or Tabanus sudeticus.

Luckily the giant version are not that common but the smaller ones are and are painful for both humans & horses. The only good thing is they stay put once they land and can easily be killed. Luxury only we humans have. By the way, it is only the female ones that sting, the males are vegetarians.

So the only help one can give the horses is covering as much as possible of their skin. Angie was away today so Luna and I were charged with removing the clothing in the evening when the flies become inactive.
