Shigeru Umebayashi - Polonaise
Moments like these, I imagine what it would be like in the past. This image and ones that look similar to it (there are many places in Japan that are windows into bygone eras) entice me to indulge in possibilities of the past.
The song I chose today is from one of my favourite films of all time, 2046. I’ve seen this at the cinema about 5 times and enjoy every moment of it. I haven’t seen it for over 10 years but for whatever reason, this image has instigated a sharp reminder of the past.
The film is set in the past, “present” and future and combines a lot of Wong Kat Wai’s other films with episodic cameos of characters and unfinished stories. The resolution never completes but it’s a sumptuous journey and very emotional on micro levels performance wise. I love the visuals, cinematography and strong sense of isolation/loneliness.
It’s unmatched and I have the poster framed in my room in Australia. A great film.
