The Night the Stones Rolled into Town

This song refers to the night in 1964 when the Rolling Stones played Wilton Hall in Bletchley (home of the Code Breakers).

It features in the Living Archive Song book — a musical history of the small towns and villages that would eventually become part of the new city of Milton Keynes.

It resonates with me because I too saw the Stones in 1964, although in another part of the country.  And like the narrator, I’d just started work - and also wore Ben Sherman shirts and Levis.

It’s only now - almost 60 years later - that I fully realise that Charlie Watts was a different sort of drummer.  Nothing flashy or egotistical - you’d never confuse him with someone who sounds like they’re building a shed.
RIP Charlie.

Another part of my youth slips away.
