A Drama in Time
My last competitive bowls game of the season saw us winning with a final terrific shot from our skip Dot. Later I watched the Ladies Pairs Final at our bowling club which went to an extra end after finishing 18 - 18. It was an exciting game with a high standard of bowling from Fiona & Imogen and Susan & Alison.
This light installation "A Drama in Time" by Graham Fagen is on Calton Road at the bottom of Jacob's Ladder. The photograph isn't too clear - it shows five neon signs (two seascapes, two sailboats and a skeleton in the middle) centred on the story of the Roselle ship that sailed from Leith to Kingston, Jamica in 1786. Robert Burns had booked a passage on the boat but dropped out at the last minute. Had he gone, he planned to be an overseer of slaves on a sugar plantation. The title is a quote from a lecture given by Patrick Geddes in 1904. When talking about planning and design he said, "A city is more than a place in space, it is a drama in time."
