NHM: Central Hall Mezzanine Details
Better in large ("L")!
Mmmm - more symmetry and details... This is another view of the first floor mezzanine level of the central hall: the terracotta ornament depicts some sort of antelope (help!?). I like all of the arches and colours and details...
I was standing in almost exactly the same place as I was when I took this photo two weeks ago, only I was facing in exactly the opposite direction...
*Update* Thank you mollyblobs: the creature is an ibex! They are members of the Caprinae subfamily: the goat-antelopes. I searched the NHM picture library and it turns out that it is an Alpine ibex based on this design by Alfred Waterhouse.
