Is it the end of summer?

It was cold this morning, when I got up. My son went home late morning - since then I’ve seen 3 lots of neighbours come back from their summer holidays.  Lots of washing, putting stuff away, folding tents, I remember it well. 
Most flowers are coming to an end in the garden - but the sweet peas are still putting on a wonderful colourful final display. Behind them you might see some ash trees - in the cemetery beyond my garden wall. By next year they will be gone - I got an e mail recently from the person in charge of the trees in Arnos Vale.  They’re all infected with die-back, and will all be cut down:(   On the positive side - more primroses and bluebells will grow if the tree canopy is sparser. Also - the complete domination of ash and sycamore was not intentional, and is not particularly desirable.  It happened at a time when the Thatcher government sold off cemeteries for £1 to private buyers. One of many disgraceful policies in the eighties. The man who bought this eventually discovered he wasn’t going to be able to build a housing estate on this sacred ground and wildlife treasure.  But during his ownership the whole place was neglected and saplings grew wherever they could. So the plan is to grow a better variety of native trees to replace the ash. Best to look at the positives :)
