The pre-party around the fire continues into the small hours. I’m back in the garden at half seven with Nick, getting the sheep onto the spit.

Salads get made, tables are arranged. Food is eaten, alcohol is consumed, cars arrive, tents are erected. Megan serves cocktails, Nick carves lamb. Tony and Eddie (Fruit and Jam) play tunes. Another year, another party.
