39 Mallard ducks on the lower lochan at Inverness Campus this morning. There were at least another ten elsewhere on this lochan, and twenty more on the upper lochan, so about seventy in total. Despite the success of the gulls and crows at picking off many of the early first broods of ducklings, the ducks look to have had a lot of success later.
Could just be that they've gathered here from far and wide, in a relatively safe spot for their period of moulting, and the couple of weeks that (unlike most other birds) they lose their main flight feathers and ability to fly.
