Grey Headed Flying Fox

Today I walked the Two Valleys Track which goes through forest (or bush as Australians say) along a creek. One of the delights of this track is a well populated grey headed flying fox camp. Being nocturnal, most of them were hanging upside down, trying to sleep, but plenty of them were flying about and making their squeaky sounds.

These little critters weigh an average of about 700 grams; their bodies are about 260mm long; and their wing span can be up to one metre. All folded up they are pretty small.

They are found only in Australia, with a distribution in a narrow strip along the south eastern coastal area of the continent. Over the last hundred years their numbers have been declining steadily, due mainly to habitat destruction, and the bush fires of 2019-2020 took an enormous toll on numbers. Their conservation status is listed as vulnerable.

Thank you for your wonderful responses to my yesterday's mono Monday entry. I very much appreciate them.

Thanks for hosting H0tamer. Stay well all.
