Finally broke it. All credit to Nalgene though. Wasn't expecting anything to come of my attempt to get a new one based on their famous (mythical or at least hugely faffy I thought) lifetime warranty.
But a new one has arrived! For just the postage cost. 

The last one did 10+ years of falls from height onto very hard surfaces and a fair few flys off the car/trailer roof at speed. As well as the usual nalgene stuff- rolling about in boats, being used as a very painful massage roller for sore muscles, hot water bottle, ice pack, marker bouy, goal post, shower. And has at least once been fired from a homemade catapult trebuchet thing. 

Hopefully the new ones up to scratch!
