Burnet mausoleum
Friday
More sunshine today, so I went walking outside - at Spring Grove cemetery and arboretum. Still very little sign of Spring color, and not many birds to be seen, so I chose one of the monuments for my blip. These cherubs adorn the mausoleum of Jacob Burnet.
Jacob Burnet was born in Newark, New Jersey on February 22, 1770. He studied law, moved to the Northwest Territory and settled in Cincinnati in 1796. He was one of Ohio's leading citizens during the late 1790s and early 1800s. In 1799, he was appointed to the Territorial Council, the legislative assembly for the Northwest Territory. He served in this position until 1802. Burnet became a director and eventually president of the Cincinnati branch of the Second Bank of the United States. His most important contribution to Ohio during his Senate term was to make possible the construction of the Miami Canal from Dayton to Maumee. Jacob Burnet was considered the "father of the Ohio constitution" and was an associate justice on the Ohio Supreme Court from 1821 to 1828, and U.S. Senator from 1828 to 1831. He died in Cincinnati on May 10, 1853, aged 83, Although Burnet spent most of his adult years holding elected or appointed political offices, he also actively participated in converting Cincinnati from a frontier town into an important city.
