Elusive Stone Faces
I saw a picture of this carving in the Westmorland Gazette in their weekly "Where is it" competition in Jan 2020. The following week I got the answer, went off to find it - and failed. Many trips later I have finally located it. It's a lot smaller than I expected, that's my excuse. The last day of the visit of Mr P's niece, they were treated to a tour of Kendal with lunch in the Waterside café.
According to the Gazette "The picture showed the small faces of John Watton's four children, carved onto a stone gatepost at the rear of Cliff Terrace.
John, who worked for K Shoes, was taken prisoner during World War Two and spent his time at the well-known Castle Colditz.
On his return he carved the faces of his children Mary, Angela, Clare and Adrian onto the gatepost. He also included a protective angel." He was also a magazine editor, German document forger and sent drawings of life in Colditz to the Illustrated London News.
