Harebell

This morning I went out on the Common in the next village looking for waxcaps but it's too early. There were lots of thistles shimmering in the early sun and in one little area I came across several harebells, Campanula rotundifolia, some using the thistles to scramble up and gain some height. I love this heavenly colour, the shape of the bell is elegant and that little spiky seedpod! Never seen one of those before.

The Scottish Wildlife Trust describe harebells in folklore: "Fairy folk and witches are strongly associated with these flowers in folklore. A patch of harebells is a favourite home for fairies and if one is to walk through such a clump, the fairies cast spells on the perpetrator, giving this flower the names of Dead Man’s Bells and Fairies’ thimbles.
