While on a walk along the South Esk we crossed the main road beside the Newbattle or Lothianbridge Viaduct. Looking up at the intricate brickwork of the arches it was amazing to realise that this. and other viaducts, were built without the modern equipment of today. It was opened in 1849 with 23 arches to replace an earlier stone, cast iron and timber viaduct, built by the Marquis of Lothian as an extension of the Edinburgh and Dalkeith Railway to serve his Lothian and Dundas Collieries near Arniston. The Waverley railway line from Edinburgh to Carlisle used to cross until it was closed to passenger traffic in 1969 and freight in 1972 and then in 2015 it reopened carrying the Borders Railway from Edinburgh to Tweedbank.
