Uncertainty
This attractive little recess is in the North wall of what is thought to have been the chancel, or possibly the nave of the medieval parish church of Deer.
It is either an aumbry - usually used to house the Communion vessels or a Sacrament house which would have been used to store the host. Traces of metal door fixings can be seen on either side of the recess.
The red granite memorial stone in the niche is relatively recent, it commemorates John and Mary Henry but there is uncertainty as to their dates. .
The yellow flower is certainly Yellow Corydalis which grows abundantly on the walls of the ruin.
